About
In 1996, I graduated from a liberal arts college, Houghton College, with a Bachelors of Art in art and a minor in business administration. Though my concentration in art was graphic design, I had the wonderful opportunity to take classes and “dabble” in other areas such as drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, photography and sculpture, as well as art history. While in college, I completed a one-semester internship with the college’s graphic design department. This was my first experience in working with real customers on real design projects. I also did a one-semester business internship at an Inn on our college campus. Making use of my art background, the owners asked me to create a drawing of the exterior of the newly-built Inn, as well as design a brochure for marketing purposes. My time at the Inn helped me to see and experience the various aspects of running such a business. After graduation, I took a position as a graphic designer with a graphic design firm in Corning, NY. My employer was a seasoned and talented designer and I learned much from working with her. My experiences there included designing logos, letterhead, envelopes, business cards, brochures, newsletters, postcards, invitations, newspaper ads, product labels, and so on. Because we had an in-house pre-press department and a print coordinator, I learned much about preparing design layouts for printing, the printing process itself, and how to request quotes and work directly with various print shops. One year later, I accepted a position as a website designer for a growing computer-related services firm, also located in Corning, NY. Through website design workshops, training received from Ziff-Davis and other training manuals and books, and various projects I was involved in, I was able to use my design skills and learn how to apply them to the World Wide Web. My experiences included working on intranet (internal) and extranet (public) web sites, working for a Fortune 500 company and several small- to medium-sized businesses, and working for government agencies and nonprofit organizations. I learned how, and had many opportunities, to coordinate projects from start to finish – from the initial meeting and creation of the project proposal to the final website uploaded to the Internet. Seven years later, in 2004, Julie Burgess Web Design came into being. Drawing upon my 20+ years of graphic design and website design experience, my desire and my passion is to provide my customers with creative designs, affordable solutions and professional quality. |
